Qiao Leikai

It has nothing to do with time...

In 2011, after his study at the Academy of Arts in Yinchuan, Ningxia Provence, Qiao Leikai travels, along with his father, who is also an artist, to Beijing to settle down in the artists village of Song Zhuang. It's good to be among many artists with big names such as Zhang Xiaogang, Yue Minjun and Fang Lijun and to be inspired by them.

During his trip to Beijing he went through vast landscapes. By witnessing his recent works these landscapes must have made great impression on him. The mapping of the landscape is enhanced by using a grid in his paintings. By repeating himself, he also creates a sense of order. Would the golden dots mean all the opportunities he sees on his way? Are they a symbol of a bright future and a new life in the big city? Do the silver dots in his paintings remind him of the city Yinchuan, that he just has left? Yinchuan literally means "Silver River".

His work has nothing to do with time or place, yet one can clearly sense it. He feels subdued and determined, but also cheerful and optimistic in his new life in the big city. The light, dark and bright colors and the golden dots are a reflection of his being.
